Apple’s first foldable phone may drop physical SIM entirely: Report

The highly anticipated foldable iPhone from Apple is generating buzz once again, following a leak that suggests it may forgo the traditional physical SIM tray in favor of an all-eSIM design. This revelation comes from a Chinese insider known as Instant Digital, who shared insights on Weibo, indicating that the upcoming device might not feature a SIM card slot at all. While eSIM technology is gaining traction in various parts of the world, this shift could pose challenges in regions like China, where eSIM adoption has not kept pace with global trends. Apple's ongoing transition to a SIM-free ecosystem could mean that users, particularly in markets like India, will need some time to adapt. However, local telecom giants such as Jio, Airtel, and Vi are already facilitating eSIM activations digitally, allowing users to make the switch conveniently without the need to visit a physical store. In addition to its connectivity features, early leaks indicate that the iPhone Fold could showcase some of Apple’s most ambitious technological advancements yet. Reports suggest a compact 5.5-inch outer display combined with a larger 7.8-inch foldable inner screen. Notably, there are claims that Apple has addressed the crease issues that have plagued many competitors, potentially offering a smooth interior display without visible imperfections. Powering the device could be Apple's forthcoming A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2-nanometre technology, promising significant improvements in both performance and energy efficiency. Furthermore, a new silicon-carbon battery type is said to enhance capacity without increasing the device's thickness, which is reportedly comparable to stacking two iPhone Air models together, ensuring a robust yet portable design. Apple may also set new standards for mobile photography with a rumored 24-megapixel under-display front camera, aiming to deliver top-tier image quality while overcoming the typical drawbacks associated with concealed cameras. Although the iPhone Fold is not expected to launch until late 2026, the continuous flow of leaks indicates that Apple is diligently progressing in its development. As the company looks to make eSIM-only designs a standard feature across its lineup, the first foldable iPhone could very well be a blend of cutting-edge technology and a forward-thinking approach to mobile connectivity.
