iPhone 18 Fold expected in 2026, 18.8-inch foldable device faces delay: Jeff Pu

Apple's eagerly awaited entry into the foldable device market may encounter a significant setback. A recent report indicates that the company's ambitious 18.8-inch foldable device is now unlikely to begin mass production as originally scheduled in late 2026, with an unveiling now pushed to early 2027. According to insights from Jeff Pu of GF Securities, referenced by MacRumors, Apple's plans for this larger foldable display have been postponed. This delay raises questions about the production timeline and potential launch of what could either be a foldable tablet or a new hybrid Mac device. Despite the postponement for the larger model, the smaller foldable device rumored to be part of the iPhone 18 lineup appears to be on schedule. Analysts suggest that the iPhone 18 Fold could still debut in September 2026, aligning with Apple’s established yearly iPhone release tradition. In addition to discussing the iPhone 18, Pu provided insights on the upcoming iPhone 17 series, slated for a September 2025 release. He noted that the enhancements in the iPhone 17 may be relatively modest, with more substantial upgrades anticipated for the iPhone 18. If launched, the 18.8-inch foldable device is expected to offer a dual-purpose experience, potentially functioning as a high-end tablet or a compact MacBook alternative. This strategy reflects a growing trend in the tech industry, where devices are increasingly designed to serve multiple functions within a single unit. Earlier reports suggested that both of Apple’s foldable devices were set to enter mass production simultaneously. However, this latest information indicates a staggered timeline, with the iPhone 18 Fold likely to precede the larger hybrid device. Once it hits the market, the iPhone 18 Fold is poised to compete directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, marking Apple's inaugural venture into the foldable smartphone arena. While Apple has yet to officially announce any foldable devices, the accumulation of reports and analytical perspectives suggests that the company is actively pursuing innovative form factors as part of its long-term hardware vision.
