Accused of misconduct, Apple’s fitness chief to step down

Jay Blahnik, the vice president of Fitness Technologies at Apple, is poised to retire in July 2026, concluding a notable 13-year career with the company. This announcement comes closely following serious allegations regarding his management style, which have raised concerns about a toxic work environment. According to reports from The New York Times, Apple communicated this development to employees through an internal email, noting Blahnik’s desire to spend more time with family and his plans to relocate to New York City. His leadership within the Fitness+ team garnered significant attention last year, particularly due to complaints from staff members who described his behavior as "verbally abusive, manipulative, and inappropriate." Additionally, allegations of sexual harassment further complicated his tenure. The reported workplace conditions have led to many employees taking extended leaves of absence for health-related issues, with over ten individuals from his team of approximately 100 seeking long-term leave since 2022. Previously, Apple reached a settlement concerning a sexual harassment complaint against Blahnik and is currently defending him in another case alleging bullying by an employee, Mandana Mofidi. Joining Apple in 2013, Blahnik was instrumental in developing key fitness features, including the Apple Watch's Activity rings. He played a crucial role in the launch of Apple Fitness+ in 2020. At this time, Apple has yet to announce a successor for Blahnik or clarify how his responsibilities will be reassigned. The future of Apple Fitness+ also remains in question, as it faces challenges with revenue generation. Currently, the health division of the service is under the purview of Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Services, with VP Sumbul Desai tasked with overseeing improvements.
