Apple has been steadily formulating its artificial intelligence strategy since unveiling it at last year's WWDC event. Now, over a year later, progress on some of its ‘Apple Intelligence’ features has been slower than anticipated, with several launches encountering unexpected challenges. Despite these hurdles, CEO Tim Cook remains steadfast in his commitment to Apple's AI vision. During a recent earnings call, Cook emphasized the company's plans to ramp up investment in artificial intelligence significantly. He mentioned to CNBC that Apple is integrating AI capabilities across its devices, platforms, and the organization as a whole. Notably, Cook revealed that Apple is open to making acquisitions to expedite its AI development. This year, Apple has reportedly acquired around seven companies, although none involved substantial financial investments. Cook clarified, "We’re very open to M&A that accelerates our roadmap. We are not stuck on a certain size company, although the ones that we have acquired thus far this year are small in nature." He further explained that the decision to acquire a company hinges on whether it can help speed up Apple’s AI initiatives. Recent reports suggest that Apple executives have considered acquiring the AI search startup Perplexity to enhance their competitive edge in the AI domain. Additionally, Apple may leverage large language model architectures from OpenAI or Anthropic for its enhanced Siri capabilities. While the company currently utilizes ChatGPT for more complex queries, it is also developing a new AI version of Siri, which has faced delays since its announcement at WWDC 2024. Moreover, Apple is confronted with challenges in retaining talent, especially as competitors like Meta ramp up their hiring efforts. Reports indicate that at least four individuals from Apple's foundation models division have joined Meta’s newly established Superintelligence Labs. As Apple navigates this evolving landscape, the company’s commitment to AI innovation remains clear.
