Apple says its App Store helped generate $1.3T in billings and sales, most without a commission

As Apple gears up for its Worldwide Developer Conference on June 9, the tech giant has revealed a significant update regarding its App Store operations. In 2024, developers reportedly generated an astonishing $1.3 trillion in billings and sales, with a remarkable 90% of these transactions occurring without Apple taking a commission. The report highlighted that among these figures, $131 billion stemmed from sales of digital goods and services, largely driven by sectors such as mobile gaming, photo and video editing applications, and various enterprise tools. Meanwhile, physical goods and services saw a surge exceeding $1 trillion, fueled by a growing demand for online grocery shopping and food delivery services. Additionally, the in-app advertising market reached $150 billion last year. Overall spending across digital and physical goods, along with in-app advertising, has more than doubled since 2019, with physical goods reflecting the most substantial growth, up by over 2.6 times according to Apple’s data. This information aims to underscore the financial opportunities the App Store offers to mobile developers beyond standard in-app purchase revenues. The platform serves as a vital marketplace for developers seeking to connect their apps with consumers, backed by Apple's essential infrastructure for app operations. However, it’s important to recognize that the App Store has matured into a critical component of the iPhone’s allure. While developers possess various tools to manage their apps independently, Apple’s regulations have historically restricted these options. Recent developments, however, indicate a shift; a recent U.S. court ruling in favor of Epic Games mandates that Apple allow developers to link to their own websites for in-app purchase processing without incurring commission fees. In Europe, Apple is contesting provisions from the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which would grant developers the ability to inform users about alternative payment options. This new data originates from a study funded by Apple and conducted by economists Professor Andrey Fradkin from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business and Dr. Jessica Burley from Analysis Group, who have partnered with Apple during its ongoing antitrust challenges to portray the App Store in a favorable light. The study also notes regional growth patterns, showing that sales facilitated by the App Store have more than doubled in the past five years across the U.S., China, and Europe. In the U.S., digital payment spending has surged more than sevenfold since 2019, driven by the widespread adoption of mobile payment solutions. The report further emphasizes that the App Store attracts an impressive average of 813 million visitors weekly worldwide and underscores Apple's commitment to investing in developer support through various tools and technologies, including coding platforms, distribution frameworks, analytics, and anti-fraud systems.
