Apple’s future in spatial computing? Vision Pro, Air and AI Glasses tipped

Apple is gearing up for an exciting evolution in spatial computing, as new reports indicate the tech giant is pursuing multiple innovative projects. Among these, a performance-enhanced update to the Vision Pro headset is on the horizon, along with the development of a more budget-friendly version dubbed "Vision Air" and even a new set of smart glasses. In the immediate future, Apple is likely to introduce a modest upgrade to its flagship Vision Pro headset, as highlighted by 9to5Mac. While the overall design may remain similar, the company is expected to transition from the existing M2 chip to the forthcoming M5 processor. This upgrade promises significant advancements in speed and efficiency for users. Additionally, Apple is exploring enhancements to the neural engine to elevate the performance of artificial intelligence functionalities. Comfort is also a priority, with redesigned head straps undergoing trials to alleviate weight distribution issues for users. Looking further ahead, Apple's ambitions may extend to a Mac-integrated version of Vision Pro. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that this model is being crafted to connect seamlessly with Mac computers, catering to specialized industries that demand high-end graphics capabilities, such as healthcare and aviation. This version aims to deliver ultra-low latency for streaming Mac displays and integrating advanced enterprise applications, reminiscent of earlier Apple concepts for augmented reality glasses, now reimagined as a comprehensive headset solution. Perhaps the most exciting potential addition to Apple's lineup is the lighter and more affordable headset known as "Vision Air." This device has been the subject of speculation since before the original Vision Pro's release, with Gurman noting that Apple is intent on addressing user concerns regarding weight, particularly neck strain, while also making the device more accessible in terms of price. In addition, Apple is reportedly exploring the development of a new category of lightweight smart glasses that may not feature displays. Instead, these glasses could be equipped with microphones, speakers, and cameras, positioning them as a versatile tool for daily use. Gurman suggests these smart glasses could be launched as early as 2026, potentially putting Apple in direct competition with Meta's Ray-Ban offerings. Together, these initiatives highlight Apple's comprehensive strategy in spatial computing, which seeks to refine the premium Vision Pro, prepare an enterprise-focused Mac edition, create a mass-market version with Vision Air, and set the stage for a future dominated by glasses-based technology.
