In a bold move to join the evolving AI landscape, Apple is reportedly working on an innovative AI wearable device, as revealed in a recent report from The Information. This unique device is designed to be worn as a pin on clothing and will feature two cameras along with three microphones. If this anticipated gadget hits the market, it could signal a significant shift in the growing AI hardware sector. This development follows remarks from OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, who hinted at the imminent announcement of OpenAI's first AI hardware device, likely set for release in the latter half of this year. Details about Apple’s wearable suggest it will resemble a thin, flat, circular disc made from aluminum and glass, similar in size to an AirTag but with a slightly thicker profile. Equipped with a standard lens and a wide-angle camera for capturing photos and videos, the device will also include a physical button, a speaker, and a charging strip akin to that of a FitBit. Speculation surrounds the potential launch timeline, with reports indicating that Apple may aim for a release in 2027, targeting an ambitious production of around 20 million units. TechCrunch has reached out to Apple for further insights, but consumer reception to such an AI device remains uncertain. Interestingly, the concept of an AI pin isn’t entirely new; two former Apple employees previously launched Humane AI, which introduced a similar product featuring integrated microphones and a camera. Unfortunately, that venture struggled post-launch, leading to the company's closure and asset acquisition by HP just two years later.
