In a recent leak ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Bloomberg has unveiled exciting new designs for an upgraded Siri app, aiming to position itself against ChatGPT and other AI chatbots. The new features will integrate seamlessly within the iPhone's operating system, enhancing overall user interaction. Users will still be able to activate Siri by pressing a button in iOS 27, but the responses will now appear from the iPhone's Dynamic Island—a distinctive black pill-shaped area atop the screen currently used for Live Activities and real-time app updates. This update is designed to streamline quick voice queries, making it even more intuitive. A notable addition is a revamped search functionality that utilizes AI to enhance user experience. By swiping down on the screen, users can now access AI-powered searches, leveraging a new model built on Google’s Gemini AI technology. This enhancement allows for more intelligent responses, enabling users to search for information, launch applications, send messages, check the weather, schedule calendar events, and access notes—all presented in a visually appealing card-style format that emerges from the Dynamic Island. Apple's strategy appears to mirror its earlier partnership with Google, which established Google as the default search engine on iPhones. Given the complexities and costs associated with developing an AI from scratch, Apple is collaborating with external partners while simultaneously focusing on its proprietary local AI systems. This dual approach not only addresses immediate user needs but also aligns with Apple's commitment to privacy, as it allows AI functionalities to operate on local devices rather than relying solely on cloud services. Furthermore, Bloomberg reports that a new standalone Siri app is in the works, aimed at directly competing with popular chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. This app will include features like accessing chat history and the ability to upload documents and images, in addition to text. With a massive user base of 2.5 billion across all devices, compared to ChatGPT's 900 million weekly active users, Apple is poised to introduce AI to a vast audience who may not yet be utilizing standalone AI tools.
