Ruoming Pang, the leading figure behind Apple’s AI foundation models, is reportedly leaving the tech giant to join Meta Platforms. This move, as reported by Bloomberg News, is said to involve a lucrative compensation package worth millions annually. Pang will play a pivotal role in Meta’s newly established Superintelligence Labs, a division dedicated to pioneering advancements in artificial intelligence. This transition highlights the fierce competition among major tech firms striving for dominance in the rapidly changing AI landscape. In recent months, companies such as Meta, OpenAI, and Google have been on a talent acquisition spree, offering staggering salaries to attract top professionals in the field. Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has recently reorganized the company’s AI initiatives under the Superintelligence Labs banner, which will be led by Alexandr Wang. The 28-year-old, who previously served as CEO of the data-labeling startup Scale AI, now holds the position of Meta’s chief AI officer. This shift follows Meta’s significant investment in Scale AI, which recently saw the startup valued at an impressive $29 billion. Pang’s exit is a significant loss for Apple, especially as the company starts to unveil its own aspirations in the AI sector. With plans to incorporate generative AI features into upcoming iterations of iOS and its devices, Apple now faces the crucial task of reevaluating its AI leadership during a pivotal moment in its development strategy.
