Apple Intelligence approved for launch in China with Alibaba’s Qwen AI

Apple's foray into the Chinese market with its generative AI service is set to take a significant leap forward. The Cyberspace Administration of China has officially given the green light for Apple Intelligence, thanks to a strategic collaboration with Alibaba's Qwen AI model. This partnership, which has been in development since last year, aims to enhance Apple’s operating systems—including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS—with advanced AI functionalities. This move represents a crucial milestone for Apple as it seeks to solidify its presence in one of its most vital markets. In a recent financial report, Apple indicated a robust 28% increase in sales within Greater China, totaling $20.5 billion in the second quarter alone. The tech giant has also reclaimed its position as the second-largest smartphone vendor in China, fueled by attractive discounts on its iPhone models during a recent shopping festival. Before aligning with Alibaba, Apple considered various partnerships, including one with Baidu, but faced challenges in tailoring its AI models to meet the needs of Chinese users. Other options included explorations with DeepSeek and ByteDance, which ultimately contributed to the delays in launching Apple Intelligence features in China, now expected in 2024. Alibaba confirmed the integration of Qwen into Apple Intelligence, emphasizing that it will enhance capabilities like text and image comprehension and generation. Following the announcement, Alibaba's U.S. shares surged by over 6% in pre-market trading, reflecting investor optimism about this promising collaboration.
