Apple Intelligence approved for launch in China with Alibaba and Baidu

Apple's latest generative AI initiative, Apple Intelligence, is set to make its debut in China. On Wednesday, it was reported by Reuters that the Cyberspace Administration of China, the country's internet content regulator, has given the green light for Apple’s AI services to operate within its borders. This approval follows a strategic partnership with Alibaba, which involves integrating its Qwen AI model into Apple's various operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS. In a related development, a spokesperson from Baidu confirmed to TechCrunch that the company is collaborating with Apple to enhance the Apple Intelligence features specifically for users in China. The partnership with Alibaba, which has been speculated since last year, represents a significant move for Apple as it aims to strengthen its AI presence in this crucial market. In the second quarter of this year, Apple reported impressive sales figures of $20.5 billion in Greater China, a 28% increase from the previous year. Additionally, Apple has reclaimed its position as the second-largest smartphone vendor in China, following a recent shopping festival that saw discounts on its iPhone models. While Apple’s collaboration with Baidu had also been rumored, there were earlier reports suggesting that the tech giant faced challenges in tailoring its AI models to meet the preferences of Chinese consumers. Moreover, Apple is reportedly investigating potential integrations with other companies like DeepSeek and ByteDance. The launch of Apple Intelligence features, which first appeared in 2024, had been stalled due to delays in receiving approval from Chinese regulators. Alibaba confirmed the news to CNBC, stating that its Qwen models would be incorporated into the Apple Intelligence experience, although they did not specify a timeline. The integrations are expected to enhance capabilities in areas such as text and image comprehension and generation.
