Apple needs to deliver an AI-charged Siri so good it gets older iPhone users to upgrade

As Apple gears up for its 50th anniversary in 2026, the tech giant is under immense pressure to deliver a game-changing version of Siri powered by artificial intelligence. Following a missed deadline in March, Apple has committed to rolling out this highly anticipated upgrade in the upcoming year. The stakes are high for Apple. After its recent struggles in the AI space, the company must now prove it can deliver an innovative experience on the iPhone. Failing to meet expectations could reinforce perceptions that Apple is lagging behind competitors like Google and emerging players such as OpenAI in the AI arena. In addition to technological challenges, Apple must also demonstrate to investors that AI can drive significant sales growth, particularly after a period of stagnation in the post-pandemic market. As the new year approaches, analysts are already anticipating a tough 2025 for Apple, especially with the potential impact of political factors like impending tariffs from the incoming administration. Apple's initial rollout of AI features in its Apple Intelligence system last fall was limited, and the flagship AI-enhanced Siri was positioned as a critical selling point for the iPhone 16, slated for early 2025. However, after a disappointing year, Apple shares, which surged in anticipation of these advancements, faced a reality check. In a strategic move, Apple CEO Tim Cook sought to mitigate tariff concerns by promising $600 billion in U.S. investments over four years, which ultimately helped alleviate some regulatory pressures and buoyed Apple’s stock, which has risen approximately 35% since that pivotal Oval Office meeting. Now, the company’s focus shifts back to AI. After the departure of key executives, including AI chief John Giannandrea, Apple maintains that it has the necessary team in place to successfully launch the Siri upgrade by 2026. This new version must not only rival popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini but also entice users with older iPhones to upgrade to the latest models. To access Apple Intelligence, users will need at least an iPhone 15 Pro, a condition that Apple previously expected would drive demand for new devices. However, the anticipated 'super cycle' of iPhone upgrades has yet to materialize. For investors, the hope is that AI will become a catalyst for renewed growth in Apple shares. Unlike ChatGPT, which charges users a monthly fee, Apple has not implemented a subscription model for its AI services. This places additional pressure on the company to utilize AI as a means of boosting sales of iPhones, Macs, and iPads. Additionally, it opens the door for new hardware ventures, such as the rumored smart glasses expected to launch next fall. Despite a rare misstep in the AI sector, Apple has time to recover. The unveiling of the iPhone 17 series showcased that innovative hardware can still drive sales. However, the company must capitalize on this opportunity, as there may not be another chance for redemption.
