Apple Watch brings Hypertension notifications to India to aid early detection

Apple has launched a groundbreaking hypertension notification feature for its Apple Watch users in India. This innovative tool is designed to notify users if the watch detects any patterns that may indicate chronic high blood pressure. With estimates suggesting that over one million undiagnosed cases could be identified in its first year, this feature aims to address a significant health concern. Hypertension, which affects approximately 1.3 billion adults globally, is the leading modifiable risk factor for serious health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. Often asymptomatic, high blood pressure can easily go unnoticed during routine medical examinations. Apple’s new system tackles this issue by employing a sophisticated algorithm that analyzes heart sensor data over a 30-day period. Utilizing its optical heart sensor, the Apple Watch monitors how blood vessels react to each heartbeat. If it consistently identifies patterns linked to hypertension, users will receive a timely notification through the Health app on their iPhones. This early warning allows individuals to make necessary lifestyle adjustments or seek treatment before their condition worsens. Apple emphasizes that this feature is firmly rooted in scientific validation, having been developed using data from numerous studies involving over 100,000 participants and further tested in a clinical study with more than 2,000 individuals. While acknowledging that the system may not catch every case, Apple believes it can surpass the reach of traditional screening methods. Professor Dorairaj Prabhakaran, executive director of the Centre for Chronic Disease Control and president-elect of the World Heart Federation, highlighted the importance of this feature, stating, "Hypertension is one of the most widespread yet underdiagnosed health conditions. Integrating opportunistic detection into a device that people wear daily will democratize access for early detection and facilitate better conversations between patients and healthcare providers." For users who receive a notification regarding hypertension, Apple recommends monitoring their blood pressure for a week using a third-party cuff and sharing the findings with a healthcare professional. This advice aligns with the latest guidelines from the American Heart Association regarding the diagnosis and management of hypertension. The feature is now available and can be activated via the Health app on iPhones running iOS 17 Pro or later.
