Apple adds hypertension and sleep-quality monitoring to Watch Ultra 3, Series 11

During its recent fall product event, Apple unveiled exciting upgrades to its smartwatch lineup, particularly highlighting the Apple Watch Series 11. Among the most notable enhancements are the new capabilities for monitoring blood pressure and assessing sleep quality. The Series 11 is equipped to alert users about potential hypertension by utilizing data from its optical heart rate sensor. This innovative feature analyzes how blood vessels react to heartbeats, aiming to identify chronic hypertension over a 30-day period. While not all cases of hypertension will be detected, Apple anticipates that this feature will help identify over one million individuals with undiagnosed hypertension within its first year of launch. This advanced functionality is rooted in machine learning algorithms developed from extensive studies involving over 100,000 participants. Furthermore, Apple is optimistic about securing FDA clearance soon, with plans to roll out the feature across 150 regions this month. In addition to hypertension monitoring, the Apple Watch Series 11 introduces a 'sleep score' feature, which evaluates sleep duration, bedtime consistency, frequency of awakenings, and time spent in different sleep stages. The smartwatch will analyze these parameters nightly and deliver a detailed breakdown of each score based on an algorithm tested against data from 5 million nights of sleep. Other enhancements include the integration of INX glass with a ceramic coating, which increases scratch resistance, making the Series 11 twice as tough as its predecessor. These updates position the Apple Watch Series 11 as a powerful tool for health and wellness management.
