Apple has announced an upcoming feature for its Wallet app that will enable U.S. users to create a digital ID linked to their passports. This innovative addition is expected to streamline the travel experience at selected TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. Initially teased as part of the iOS 26 launch, this feature aims to enhance the functionality of Apple Wallet, transforming it from a simple payment tool into a comprehensive platform for securely managing digital identities. Currently, Apple Wallet supports government IDs in 12 states and Puerto Rico, covering approximately one-third of U.S. driver's license holders. However, the passport-linked digital ID feature did not launch with iOS 26, as Apple plans to roll it out in a future software update. While these digital IDs will not replace physical passports, they promise to expedite the process for travelers passing through TSA checkpoints, complementing existing support for digital boarding passes. This announcement comes amidst the implementation of Real ID regulations, which began enforcement in May and have rendered many state-issued IDs inadequate for TSA travel. Jennifer Bailey, Apple Pay and Wallet's VP, revealed the forthcoming digital ID feature during her presentation at the Money 20/20 USA conference. She also shared insights on Wallet’s growing adoption, noting that Apple Pay is now operational in 89 markets globally, supported by over 11,000 banks and networks, including 15 domestic ones. Furthermore, Bailey highlighted that 90% of U.S. retailers now accept Apple Pay, a significant increase from just 3% when it first launched 11 years ago. The Wallet app continues to evolve, offering users the ability to store car keys, transit passes, hotel keys, and more. Currently, transit options are available in over 250 regions and 800 cities worldwide, with more than 2 million hotel room keys issued across 65,000 hotel rooms. Additionally, 29 car manufacturers and over 300 vehicle models now support the Car Key feature in Wallet.
