Apple Vision Pro exec is reportedly leaving for OpenAI

Paul Meade, who held the position of vice president overseeing the Vision Pro headset at Apple, is set to transition to OpenAI's hardware division, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Meade played a crucial role in the development of Apple's AI-driven smart glasses, which are scheduled for launch next year. Although the premium-priced Vision Pro has not gained the expected traction in the market, Apple is optimistic that its upcoming, more budget-friendly smart glasses will enable it to better compete with wearable technology from Meta. This personnel shift appears to coincide with John Ternus' anticipated promotion to CEO of Apple. Ternus is reportedly reorganizing the hardware engineering team, a move that has left some vice presidents feeling sidelined. At OpenAI, Meade will join forces with former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive, who is collaborating on a new AI device. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has suggested that this upcoming device will offer a more serene experience compared to the iPhone, although reports from last fall indicated that the team faced challenges in finalizing its design. TechCrunch has reached out to both Apple and OpenAI for further comments.
