Apple building a ChatGPT rival to improve iPhone's AI ahead of iPhone 17 launch

Apple is embarking on an exciting new journey to develop its own AI-powered chatbot, internally dubbed the "Answer Engine." This strategic move aims to compete with existing platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, as reported by Bloomberg. To spearhead this initiative, Apple has quietly assembled a specialized internal team known as "Answers, Knowledge and Information" (AKI). The team, led by Robby Walker—previously a key player in the Siri division—operates under the guidance of the company’s AI chief, John Giannandrea. The primary focus of AKI is to revolutionize how users interact with search functionalities across Apple devices, filling a notable gap that the company has faced in the generative AI landscape. This renewed emphasis on developing in-house AI solutions comes at a critical time when the limitations of Apple’s recently introduced Apple Intelligence platform have become evident. While Apple Intelligence offers features like Genmoji and smart summaries, it still relies on external partners, such as OpenAI, for advanced interactions via Siri. A robust, in-house alternative could enhance the capabilities of Siri by merging its contextual understanding with the conversational skills of generative AI. Though still in the early stages, the proposed Answer Engine is expected to have the ability to crawl the web and generate answers to general knowledge questions. Apple is considering launching it as either a standalone application or as an integrated feature within Siri, Safari, and Spotlight in future iterations of iOS. Recent job postings on Apple’s careers page indicate a growing need for talent experienced in search algorithms and engine development, suggesting that the project is gaining momentum. This strategic pivot comes despite earlier skepticism from Apple executives regarding the practicality of chatbot-style AI. The shift in perspective likely reflects the increasing pressure on Apple to keep up with leaders in generative AI and to address the lukewarm reception of Apple Intelligence, particularly following delays in the much-anticipated updates to Siri. In the meantime, Apple appears to be progressing with the development of its upcoming flagship device, the iPhone 17 Pro, with prototype models spotted in San Francisco, cleverly disguised in camouflage. This signals that hardware development is on schedule for the company’s next significant product cycle, potentially featuring the AKI chatbot. If the initiative succeeds, it could signify a pivotal advancement in Apple’s AI strategy, addressing longstanding deficiencies in Siri and transforming search functionalities throughout the Apple ecosystem.
