Apple’s new Workout Buddy helps you sweat smarter

At the recent WWDC 2025 conference, Apple introduced Workout Buddy, an innovative AI fitness coach designed to enhance your workout experience. This sophisticated tool analyzes data from your ongoing exercise sessions as well as your fitness history—including metrics like running pace, distance covered, closed activity rings, and overall training load—to provide real-time coaching tailored to your needs. Workout Buddy employs advanced Apple Intelligence found on the iPhone, utilizing a text-to-speech model that delivers motivational messages in an engaging generative voice reminiscent of a personal fitness trainer. This unique voice is crafted from the vocal patterns of Fitness+ trainers, who are familiar faces from Apple's Fitness+ app. Users can select from various voices to find the perfect motivational match for their workouts. The integration extends to the Apple Watch and iPhone’s Workout app, which now initiates each running session with an energizing pep talk. The app tracks significant milestones during your workout, such as reaching the four-mile mark, recording your fastest mile, and monitoring your average heart rate. After completing a session, the AI summarizes your performance, including average pace, heart rate, and any milestones achieved, such as earning a 10K run award. Initially available in English and covering popular workout types, Apple emphasizes that Workout Buddy is designed to be both personal and private. Additionally, the Workout app on Apple Watch is receiving a fresh layout that makes features like Custom Workout and Race Route easily accessible. New media options are also being introduced, allowing users to let Apple Music curate the ideal playlist based on their workout intensity or personal preferences, or to select from suggested playlists and podcasts tailored to their listening habits and workout styles.
