At the recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 25), Apple introduced an exciting visual overhaul for its operating systems, dubbed 'Liquid Glass.' This innovative user interface brings a sleek, shiny, and transparent aesthetic to the software, enhancing the overall user experience. The Liquid Glass design draws inspiration from Apple's upcoming VR headset, the Vision Pro, and aims to create a cohesive look across iPhones and other Apple devices. This update suggests a forward-thinking approach, indicating that Apple's software might eventually extend beyond traditional devices, potentially embracing augmented reality glasses in the future. Alan Dye, Apple’s Vice President of Design, showcased this significant visual refresh, marking the most substantial update to iOS since the transition from skeuomorphic to flat design in iOS 7. The original skeuomorphic style attempted to replicate real-world objects, while the flat design favored simplicity and minimalism. Over the years, iOS has evolved to incorporate glossy and semi-translucent elements, reminiscent of a frosted glass surface. Dye emphasized that the Liquid Glass interface embodies the optical properties of glass and fluidity unique to Apple. This redesign promises enhanced clarity for navigation and controls, with a dynamic response to user interactions that creates a more engaging experience. The interface will react in real-time to both content and user input, offering a lively interaction. The new display mimics the behavior of real glass, adapting its color based on user content and the surrounding light conditions. Notifications will emerge from touch points, and menus will expand into easily scannable lists. This aesthetic transformation will affect not only system features such as the Lock Screen and Notifications but also the app icons, which will now appear as if crafted from multiple layers of liquid glass, available in light, dark, and a new clear mode.
