Apple introduces systemwide dictation

At the highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, Apple unveiled a groundbreaking systemwide dictation feature integrated into its upcoming iOS 27. This new functionality is powered by Apple's latest AI model, inspired by Google's Gemini, and promises a seamless dictation experience across all applications. The dictation tool, which is embedded directly in the keyboard, boasts advanced capabilities, including automatic corrections for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. This enhancement aims to significantly improve user experience by making dictation easier and more effective across various apps. Recent trends have shown a surge in the popularity of AI-driven dictation applications, such as Wispr Flow, Willow, and Monolouge. These apps excel at refining spoken input by removing filler words like "ums" and "ahs," and adjusting the text format based on context. However, Apple previously imposed restrictions on some of these applications starting with iOS 26.4, requiring additional steps to initiate dictation sessions through third-party keyboards. With its newly integrated dictation feature, Apple is poised to simplify the user experience and potentially outshine these third-party apps. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the upcoming iOS 27 update will facilitate a more straightforward process for third-party developers to collaborate with Apple's dictation system. Notably, this announcement follows Google's introduction of a similar dictation feature in its Gboard, also utilizing the Gemini technology, which operates across the entire system.
