At WWDC 2025, Apple introduces an AI-powered Shortcuts app

During the WWDC 2025 event, Apple unveiled an innovative AI-enhanced version of its Shortcuts app, a significant leap forward in user experience. The tech giant announced that the app can now harness the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, allowing developers to utilize its on-device large language model (LLM). With this advanced Shortcuts app, users can interact with AI models directly on their devices or through Private Compute to generate tailored responses that enhance their shortcuts. For instance, students can create a shortcut that leverages AI to compare their audio transcriptions of lectures with their notes, identifying key points they might have missed. Additionally, the integration of ChatGPT allows users to receive further contextual responses to enrich their shortcuts. The app introduces 'intelligent actions,' a new category of shortcuts powered by Apple Intelligence. This includes features such as AI-driven text summarization through Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools and image creation via Image Playground. Apple announced that these exciting new features would be available for testing starting Monday. This release follows last year's announcement of an AI-enhanced Siri, which promised greater personalization but faced delays in launch. At WWDC 2025, Apple reaffirmed its commitment to AI advancements, introducing an updated Shortcuts app aimed at simplifying scripting and automation tasks for users. By making these tools more accessible, particularly for those who may not be tech-savvy, Apple hopes to broaden the appeal of the Shortcuts app beyond just power users. Popular shortcuts currently enable users to perform a variety of tasks, such as creating custom memes or GIFs, generating meeting notes, tracking time spent on activities, crafting playlists, saving PDFs, determining photo locations, setting location-based reminders, and even downloading files. This update could serve as a temporary solution to the delays in fully upgrading Siri, as the AI-assisted automation features promise to enhance the efficiency of using iPhones—provided users are willing to invest time in creating their shortcuts.
