At the recent WWDC event, Apple announced an exciting new feature: Live Translation. This innovative capability, driven by Apple Intelligence, will be integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls. Leslie Ikemoto, Apple’s director of input experience, highlighted that this feature allows for on-the-fly translation of conversations, ensuring seamless communication across different languages. According to Ikemoto, the translation technology operates using Apple’s built models, which function entirely on your device, safeguarding the privacy of your personal discussions. In Messages, users will benefit from automatic translation as they type, allowing for real-time exchanges in their preferred language. Similarly, responses from your contacts will be translated instantly, enhancing the overall messaging experience. In addition to text, FaceTime users will enjoy live captions that translate spoken words in real-time. On phone calls, whether the other party is using an Apple device or not, your speech can be translated as you converse, with the translation being audibly delivered to the recipient. This means that as you interact with someone speaking a different language, you will hear a spoken translation of their responses. For developers keen on incorporating this feature, Ikemoto mentioned that enabling live translation for calls will be straightforward with a new API. However, Apple has not yet disclosed the number of languages that will be supported by this transformative feature.
