In a significant announcement at WWDC 2025, Apple introduced its new Foundation Models framework, designed to empower developers to leverage AI capabilities directly on devices without the need for an internet connection. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Vice President of Software Engineering, highlighted how this framework enables applications to utilize on-device AI models developed by Apple, enhancing user experiences across various platforms. Federighi illustrated the framework's potential with a practical example: "Imagine preparing for an exam; an app like Kahoot could generate a tailored quiz based on your notes, making study sessions more interactive." He emphasized that since these processes occur locally, users won't incur cloud API costs, adding a layer of efficiency and privacy protection. In a detailed blog post, Apple noted that the Foundation Models framework seamlessly integrates with Swift, the company's programming language for app development. Developers can access Apple Intelligence models with just three lines of code, simplifying the process significantly. The framework also includes features like guided generation and tool calling, making it versatile for various applications. Notable companies are already adopting this innovative framework; Automattic is integrating it into its Day One journaling app, while the mapping service AllTrails is utilizing it to suggest optimal hiking routes. Developers can begin testing the Foundation Models framework today through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta set to launch in early next month.
