iPhone 17 launch to boost Apple India sales, prices steady despite US tariff

In a highly anticipated launch event on Tuesday, Apple introduced four new iPhone models along with a fresh lineup of wearables, including updates to its AirPods and Watch series. This comes despite the challenges posed by significant tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration, which has impacted the company's pricing strategy. For the Indian market, Apple has adjusted the base price of its latest iPhone to ₹82,900, marking a modest 4% increase—the first such adjustment in several years. Analysts are optimistic that the new products will significantly enhance Apple's sales in India as the festive season approaches, anticipating double-digit growth. The introduction of the iPhone Air and a redesigned iPhone 17 Pro are particularly expected to attract loyal customers, especially with older models being offered at discounted prices across various retailers. Following the announcement, Apple's stock experienced a slight decline, dropping 2.2% from its peak on the Nasdaq and an additional 0.2% in after-hours trading, before making a small recovery. Despite this, the excitement surrounding Apple's annual iPhone event remains palpable, drawing global attention as one of the premier consumer technology unveilings. Apple's market capitalization now stands at an impressive $3.5 trillion, with nearly half of its annual revenue—approximately $400 billion—generated by iPhone sales worldwide. India has become increasingly important for Apple’s growth strategy, both in manufacturing and sales. While the new pricing is higher than in previous years, it remains below last year's figures for the same storage capacity, which may appeal to price-sensitive customers. The new AirPods Pro 3, priced at ₹25,900, feature a 'live translate' capability, which analysts believe could be a strong selling point as the festive season kicks off. Pre-orders for all new devices are available immediately, with sales commencing in stores starting September 19. Industry experts, including Prabhu Ram from CyberMedia, suggest that Apple is well-positioned for a successful festive season in India. The iPhone Air, noted for its innovative design, could entice upgrades from users of older models, such as the iPhone 12 through 15. Tarun Pathak of Counterpoint echoed this sentiment, predicting one of the best festive seasons for Apple in India, with sales growth expected to exceed previous years. Despite the slight increase in prices, it is believed that this will not deter buyers, as many in India prefer financing options that can offset the cost. Furthermore, there is growing demand for discounted deals on the iPhone 15 and 16 models, a trend that typically boosts sales during this time. Currently, Apple’s lineup includes the iPhone 16e starting at ₹59,900, the iPhone 16 at ₹69,900, and the four new iPhone 17 variants—standard, Air, Pro (from ₹1.35 lakh), and Pro Max (from ₹1.5 lakh). With India becoming one of Apple's fastest-growing markets, CEO Tim Cook has highlighted record quarterly revenues over the past three years. Apple's sales have consistently increased by over 20% annually since 2019 and are projected to exceed 15 million units this year. In addition to these product launches, Apple has also expanded its retail presence in India, opening two new physical stores in Bengaluru and Pune, both attracting thousands of visitors on their opening days. Furthermore, Apple is working to double its production capacity in India, primarily to cater to the U.S. market, sparking concerns about tariffs from the U.S. government. Despite having incurred significant costs due to tariffs, Apple has maintained stable pricing for its latest launch, indicating confidence in the Indian market’s potential for growth. As excitement builds around the latest iPhone releases, Apple is focused on converting heightened consumer interest into substantial sales.
