iOS, macOS, and iPadOS 26.5 updates arrive with encrypted RCS messaging and more

Today, Apple rolled out version 26.5 of its operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and the HomePod software. While these updates don't introduce groundbreaking changes—typical for this stage in their development—they do bring several new features along with crucial security patches as noted on Apple’s security vulnerabilities page. One of the standout features in this release is the introduction of end-to-end encryption for the RCS messaging standard. This new capability promises to offer green-bubble messages a level of security and privacy akin to what iMessage users have enjoyed for years. However, it's important to note that this encrypted messaging feature is currently in beta and is limited to a specific group of cellular carriers, with more support expected to be rolled out gradually. In the Messages app, users will see a padlock icon for encrypted chats; if the icon is absent, the message is not encrypted, even if RCS is being used. Additionally, the 26.5 updates include new Pride-themed wallpapers and preliminary work to incorporate advertisements within the Apple Maps application. There are also various smaller enhancements and bug fixes specific to each platform, all of which can be explored through Apple's detailed release notes. It's worth mentioning that Apple is actively testing updates related to third-party wearable support in the EU to meet local regulations, although these changes have not yet made their way into the public updates for iOS.
