Today, Apple rolled out its 26.4 updates across multiple platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS Tahoe, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and HomePod. A primary motivation for users to download these updates is the robust array of security fixes. Detailed information on these security improvements can be found on Apple's dedicated security website. Unlike the relatively subdued 26.3 release from last month, this update introduces several noteworthy features. Among the most prominent additions is the charging limit option for MacBooks, allowing users to prevent their batteries from charging to full capacity. Furthermore, Safari on macOS Tahoe and iPadOS 26 sees the return of the “compact” tab view, enhancing browsing efficiency. Another significant enhancement is the activation of Stolen Device Protection by default. This feature, along with new emoji from the Unicode 17.0 release, AI-generated playlists in Apple Music, and expanded Creator Studio functionalities in the Freeform app, adds to the overall appeal of the update. Additionally, Family Sharing options have become more flexible, permitting adult members to utilize different payment methods for their purchases. However, a much-anticipated feature that is currently under testing but not included in the final 26.4 release is end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging. Until this feature is fully implemented, messages sent to Android users will continue to rely on the unencrypted version of RCS, which Apple began deploying in 2024. The version of RCS that supports end-to-end encryption, known as 3.0, also includes functionalities like inline replies and the ability to edit or unsend messages—features that are already available in iMessage, raising questions about potential updates for RCS messaging.
