Apple’s iOS 26.5 update rolls out with new features to iPhones: Here’s what’s new

Apple has officially launched its latest iPhone update, iOS 26.5, bringing a host of exciting changes and features that enhance user experience across various applications and the overall interface. This update includes significant privacy enhancements, notably the introduction of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages, alongside visual upgrades like the new Pride Luminance wallpaper, designed to brighten up the user interface. For iPhone users, particularly those with an iPhone 11 or more recent models, this update promises to deliver a range of new functionalities, performance improvements, and crucial security enhancements. One of the standout features is the newly implemented E2EE for RCS messages, which ensures that text communications between iPhone and Android devices are secured similarly to iMessages. This feature will be available to users whose mobile carriers support the latest RCS standard, and encryption is set to be enabled by default. Users can easily modify their settings within the Messages section of the iPhone Settings app. In addition to security upgrades, the Maps app has received a notable enhancement with the introduction of the “Suggested Places” feature. This new addition recommends locations based on users’ recent searches and popular trends, offering a more personalized navigation experience. The update also debuts a striking new Pride Luminance wallpaper, complete with customization options that allow users to choose from an array of colors. This wallpaper refracts colors when unlocking the device, adding a visually appealing element to the iPhone's interface. Other notable changes in iOS 26.5 include the addition of a new Inuktitut keyboard layout and various security enhancements that address over 50 vulnerabilities. Additionally, users will find a new transfer setting that simplifies the process of selecting message attachments when moving between iPhone and Android devices. There are also updates aimed at improving compatibility with third-party wearables in the EU. However, the update does not include the anticipated AI-powered enhancements for Siri, which many users were hoping for. Speculation suggests that Apple may unveil significant AI features during its upcoming WWDC event, particularly with the anticipated iOS 27 update.
