Apple’s iOS 26.4 arrives in public beta with AI music playlists, video podcasts, and more

This week, Apple launched the public beta of its latest mobile operating system, iOS 26.4, packed with innovative features that enhance the user experience. Notable updates include an AI-driven playlist generator in Apple Music, the introduction of video podcasts in the Podcasts app, and enhanced security through end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging. One of the standout features in this update is the new AI-powered "Playlist Playground" within Apple Music. Leveraging Apple Intelligence, this tool allows users to create personalized 25-song playlists based on simple text prompts, such as "upbeat workout mix" or "calm evening." Users can further customize these playlists and select cover art that fits their style. Additionally, the Apple Music interface has been revamped to highlight full-screen artwork for albums and playlists, alongside a new section called "Concerts Near You," which helps users find live performances from their favorite artists, complete with filtering options by date and genre. In response to Spotify's push into video content, Apple Podcasts now enables users to effortlessly switch between audio and video episodes. Podcast creators can publish video content using HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), allowing listeners to transition seamlessly between formats. The HLS feature also includes automatic quality adjustments, ensuring optimal playback whether users are connected to Wi-Fi or cellular networks. Furthermore, users will have the option to download video episodes for offline enjoyment. At launch, HLS will be supported by platforms such as Acast, Amazon's ART19, and SiriusXM. Another significant upgrade comes in the form of encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS), which is currently being tested. This feature aims to provide end-to-end encryption for messages exchanged between iPhone and Android users, enhancing security and privacy in communications. Security enhancements are also a focus in iOS 26.4, with the introduction of Stolen Device Protection now enabled by default. This feature requires biometric authentication for certain sensitive actions, such as accessing passwords or making account changes, thus minimizing the risk of unauthorized access in case of device theft. For drivers using Apple CarPlay, the update introduces in-car video playback for select apps, including the Apple TV app, but only when the vehicle is parked to ensure safety. This feature offers a new level of entertainment for passengers while waiting in the car. Additionally, CarPlay will now provide access to third-party AI services, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The Camera app also sees improvements with the addition of Audio Zoom, which focuses the microphone on the subject while zooming in during video recording, effectively reducing background noise and enhancing audio clarity. iOS 26.4 also introduces an Ambient Music widget for quick access to soundscapes designed for relaxation and focus. Moreover, the Reminders app now features an "Urgent" section, allowing users to prioritize critical tasks and receive timely alerts as deadlines approach. While these updates are significant, the anticipated next-generation Siri experience is notably absent from this release, as Apple continues to refine its AI capabilities for future versions.
