Not ready for iOS 26? Apple offers iOS 18.7 with security fixes

Apple has launched its latest mobile operating system, iOS 26, featuring an innovative function known as Liquid Glass. For those hesitant to transition to this new version, the tech giant has simultaneously made iOS 18.7 available, providing users with a safer alternative. This dual release allows iPhone owners to make a choice, although Apple’s history suggests that support for the older version won't last long. Typically, the company maintains updates for the previous iOS release for just a couple of months, enabling users to decide before they are ultimately encouraged to upgrade. For individuals looking to avoid the possible issues and bugs that can accompany major updates, iOS 18.7 is a perfect solution. This version is significantly smaller—about one-fifteenth the size of iOS 26—resulting in a quicker installation time while also delivering essential bug fixes and security improvements. However, Apple has yet to specify the vulnerabilities that have been addressed, a detail it usually shares once a substantial number of devices have been updated. Compatibility plays a crucial role in this decision. iOS 18.7 is available for all iPhones released since 2018, including the iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr, extending to the latest iPhone 16 series, including the budget-friendly iPhone 16e. In contrast, iOS 26 supports all these devices except the three earliest models in that range. While many users are excited to explore the capabilities of Liquid Glass, others might prefer to wait until its reliability is tested in daily use. Currently, iPhone owners face two distinct options: dive into Apple's most ambitious update yet, or opt for a more conservative, security-oriented patch. Regardless of the choice, the window for both options is narrowing quickly.
