iOS 18.6 is out with bug fixes, security enhancements: Should you update?

Apple has released iOS 18.6, likely the final update in the iOS 18 series, just ahead of the anticipated iOS 26 launch later this year. While this update may not feature any eye-catching new tools, it is packed with crucial bug fixes and significant security enhancements, particularly for users within the European Union. Among the most noteworthy improvements is a fix for a recurring issue in the Photos app that hindered users from sharing memory videos. Apple acknowledged this resolution in its release notes, emphasizing, "This update provides important bug fixes and security updates, and fixes an issue in Photos that could prevent memory movies from being shared." Moreover, the update introduces over 20 security patches impacting essential components including WebKit, VoiceOver, and the Mail app. These measures address vulnerabilities that could have been exploited to leak sensitive information or execute harmful code. For iPhone users in the European Union, iOS 18.6 brings changes aimed at complying with the Digital Markets Act. The update enhances the process for installing third-party app stores and downloading apps directly from the web, aligning Apple’s offerings with EU competition standards. Device compatibility for iOS 18.6 extends to all models that initially supported iOS 18, starting from the iPhone XR and iPhone XS series, all the way to the latest iPhone 16 lineup. Additionally, iPad users can also upgrade to iPadOS 18.6, which shares the same bug fixes and security updates. To install iOS 18.6, users should follow the standard update process. The rollout may take some time to reach all regions and devices. It's important to note that those on beta versions of iOS 26 wishing to revert to iOS 18.6 will need to erase their devices and opt out of beta updates before reinstalling the stable release. Though iOS 18.6 does not introduce new features, Apple highly recommends the update due to the numerous vulnerabilities it resolves. This update enhances overall system stability, ensures better compliance for EU users, and restores vital functionality in key applications like Photos. With iOS 26 on the horizon, this update serves as a critical transition to the next phase of iOS development.
