Here are Apple’s top AI announcements from WWDC 2025

At this year's WWDC, Apple showcased its latest advancements, shifting focus from its ambitious AI initiatives to significant updates across its operating systems and services. Among the new features is a striking aesthetic dubbed 'Liquid Glass' that promises a fresh user experience. Despite the shift in focus, Apple made several notable AI announcements that captivated the audience. One of the highlights is Visual Intelligence, an innovative image analysis tool that enhances users' interaction with their environment. This technology can identify various elements, from plants to clothing, and now it can also interact with what's displayed on your iPhone. For example, while browsing social media, Visual Intelligence can conduct related image searches, utilizing platforms like Google and ChatGPT for deeper insights. Users can access this feature through the Control Center or by customizing the Action button, with its debut set for iOS 26 later this year. In addition, Apple has integrated ChatGPT into its Image Playground, an AI image generation tool. This allows users to create images in diverse styles, including anime and watercolor, with the option to send prompts to ChatGPT for additional image creation. Apple's AI-driven workout coach is designed to enhance exercise routines by using a text-to-speech model to motivate users, mimicking a personal trainer's encouragement. As users engage in their workouts, the AI provides insights into performance metrics, such as pace and heart rate, culminating in a summary after each session. Furthermore, a significant advancement in communication comes with a new live translation feature for Messages, FaceTime, and phone calls. This technology enables real-time translations of spoken or written words into the user's selected language, complete with live captions for FaceTime and audible translations for phone calls. Two additional AI features for phone calls include call screening, which discreetly answers calls from unknown numbers and informs users of the caller's name and intent, and hold assist, which detects hold music and allows users to multitask while waiting for a representative. The Messages app now also supports poll creation, leveraging Apple Intelligence to suggest polls based on ongoing conversations, streamlining decision-making in group chats. Enhancements to the Shortcuts app will allow users to choose AI models for tasks like summarization, while a minor update to Spotlight will improve its contextual awareness, personalizing suggestions based on user activity. Developers will now have offline access to Apple’s AI models via the Foundation Models framework, fostering the integration of advanced AI capabilities into third-party applications. This move is seen as a strategic effort to bolster Apple's competitive edge in the AI landscape. Despite the excitement, one of the most anticipated announcements regarding Siri's AI enhancements was notably absent, with Apple's SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, indicating that further details would be revealed next year. This delay has raised questions about Apple's future direction in the voice assistant arena as competition heats up.
