Apple’s new AirTag is louder and can be found across longer distances

On Monday, Apple announced an upgraded version of its AirTag, boasting a variety of enhancements aimed at improving user experience. The new model features an extended Bluetooth range, a significantly louder speaker, and advanced precision finding capabilities, now utilizing Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip found in devices like the iPhone 17 and the latest Apple Watches. With the introduction of Precision Finding, users can now receive haptic, visual, and audio feedback, making it easier to locate misplaced items. According to Apple, this upgraded tracking functionality allows users to find items from distances that are 50% greater than those achievable with the previous generation. The enhanced Bluetooth technology also contributes to the extended range for locating items. Notably, Precision Finding can now be accessed through the Apple Watch Series 9 and later models, along with the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and subsequent versions. In addition to its improved features, the AirTag’s speaker has been made 50% louder, enabling users to hear alerts from twice the distance compared to earlier models. The device also integrates with the Share Item Location feature on iOS, allowing users to temporarily share the AirTag's location with others. Currently, 50 airlines have partnered with Apple to facilitate luggage tracking via AirTag. Despite these enhancements, the pricing remains unchanged, with a single AirTag costing $29 and a four-pack available for $99, which includes complimentary personalized engraving. Since its launch in 2021, AirTag has quickly dominated the market for Bluetooth item trackers, overshadowing competitors like Tile. Tile has accused Apple of unfair competition due to its vast user base and integration with the Find My app. Other brands, such as Chipolo, have chosen to collaborate with Apple’s Find My network while offering alternatives that work across both iOS and Android platforms. Despite the competition, estimates suggest that nearly 70% of trackers sold in late 2024 were AirTags, though Apple has not publicly disclosed its sales figures for this product.
