Apple’s new Studio displays come with Thunderbolt 5

On Tuesday, Apple unveiled a new lineup of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, showcasing the latest advancements in their chip technology. Alongside these laptops, the tech giant introduced a new series of displays, including the Studio Display priced at $1,599 and the premium Studio Display XDR at $3,299. These new 27-inch displays come equipped with advanced camera features and enhanced connectivity options. Both models incorporate a 12MP Center Stage camera, which Apple claims significantly enhances image quality. A standout feature is Desk View, allowing users to simultaneously show their face and a top-down view of their workspace. The Studio Display boasts a remarkable 5K Retina screen with over 14 million pixels, delivering 600 nits of brightness and supporting the P3 wide-gamut color standard, which encompasses a wider array of colors compared to traditional sRGB. With Thunderbolt 5 ports, users can connect multiple accessories and daisy-chain up to four displays, with a Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable included in the package. In terms of audio, the new systems feature a three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system enhanced with Spatial Audio technology. Apple claims that the new audio setup provides 30% deeper bass compared to its predecessor. The Studio Display XDR takes it a step further with its 5K Retina XDR display, featuring a resolution of 5120×2880, a mini-LED backlight, and over 2,000 local dimming zones. It reaches up to 1000 nits of SDR brightness and can peak at 2000 nits for HDR, boasting a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. Furthermore, it supports the Adobe RGB color standard and features a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync capabilities. Additionally, this display is equipped with DICOM medical imaging presets and a Medical Imaging Calibrator, making it suitable for medical environments. However, Apple notes that the Medical Imaging Calibrator for macOS is awaiting FDA approval and will soon be available in the United States. While the Studio Display comes with a tilt-adjustable stand, the Display XDR offers height adjustments as well. Apple provides options for both standard and nano-texture glass finishes. Pre-orders for these displays will commence on March 4, with availability starting March 11.
