During the recent WWDC 2025 event, Apple announced an exciting update to Xcode, its renowned app development platform. This new version integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT, enabling developers to enhance their coding experience through AI-driven suggestions, documentation generation, and more. The latest iteration, Xcode 26, allows developers to seamlessly incorporate API keys to utilize AI models from various providers, empowering them with advanced programming assistance. Apple emphasized in a blog post that this integration enables developers to directly connect AI models into their workflow, facilitating tasks such as writing code, creating tests, iterating on designs, and resolving errors. With the introduction of these AI capabilities, developers can generate code previews and perform a multitude of tasks more efficiently. Notably, users can access ChatGPT within Xcode without needing to create a separate account, while those with paid ChatGPT subscriptions can link their accounts for enhanced rate limits. In addition to the integration with ChatGPT, Apple also rolled out the Foundation Models framework, allowing developers to leverage the company’s AI models that run directly on devices. Apple highlighted that accessing these models requires only three lines of code, and they can also be executed on devices powered by Apple Silicon. There was speculation that Apple might collaborate with Anthropic to introduce a new coding tool, but ultimately, the integration of ChatGPT became the company’s clear choice. Last year, Apple showcased Swift Assist, a coding assistant for Xcode, but it has yet to see a wide release.
