On Monday, Apple introduced a budget-friendly version of its iPhone 17, named the iPhone 17e, as part of its strategy to enhance smartphone sales while addressing concerns regarding its position in the competitive AI landscape. Priced at $599, the iPhone 17e serves as a simplified alternative to the higher-end iPhone 17, featuring the same processor but a slightly smaller display. Unlike its pricier counterpart, this new model is equipped with a single camera instead of two and does not include the Dynamic Island feature that displays app information. The iPhone 17e is set to be released on March 11 and represents a shift in Apple’s approach, as the company usually does not launch new budget models annually, unlike their flagship devices. This release follows last year's iPhone 16e, signaling a potential increase in demand for more affordable smartphones after the lukewarm reception of the iPhone Air. As Apple navigates its AI advancements, iPhone sales have been crucial in alleviating investor concerns. The tech giant exceeded revenue expectations in the fourth quarter of 2025, primarily due to the success of the iPhone 17. Additionally, Apple reported an impressive increase in iPhone upgrades and a notable rise in users transitioning from Android devices. Apple CEO Tim Cook remarked on the impressive demand for the iPhone during the company’s earnings call, expressing optimism about the market’s reception. The iPhone 17e, significantly cheaper than the iPhone 17, could further promote the adoption of Apple’s AI capabilities among users of older devices that lack support for these features. However, the broader smartphone market faces challenges, including an ongoing memory shortage attributed to the AI boom. According to the International Data Corporation, a 6.8% decline in the global smartphone market is anticipated for the first quarter of this year. The launch of the iPhone 17e marks the beginning of what is expected to be a pivotal year for Apple, with the anticipated release of an upgraded Siri powered by Google’s Gemini AI and potentially the company’s first foldable iPhone, as reported by Bloomberg. The iPhone 17e will be available in black, white, and pink, boasting more storage than its predecessor and a new cellular modem that promises double the speed of the previous model. Alongside this announcement, Apple also revealed an updated version of the iPad Air.
