Apple opens its new Siri AI to everyone with the iOS 27 public beta

Apple is set to revolutionize user interaction with its AI assistant, Siri, by expanding access through the iOS 27 public beta. This significant rollout allows a wider audience to experience the revamped Siri before its official release later this fall. For the first time, everyday users can engage with an AI-driven Siri, marking a departure from its previous developer-only access. With approximately 2.5 billion active devices globally, even a small fraction of users trying out the public beta will constitute the most extensive trial of Apple's redesigned AI assistant, which aims to compete with other leading AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini. Announced during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June, the Siri update is designed to transform the aging voice assistant into a more intelligent, capable tool that can interact with a user’s device data, such as emails, photos, and messages. The enhanced Siri can now respond to on-screen content and provide informed answers based on a vast knowledge base, similar to modern AI chatbots. Its integration into the operating system allows users to activate it by saying "Hey Siri," pressing the side button, or swiping down from the Dynamic Island, making it more accessible than ever. Furthermore, Siri's functionality is elevated through its incorporation into the iPhone's search tool, Spotlight, enabling it to address a wide variety of inquiries. In an interesting shift, Siri has been given its own standalone app, catering to users accustomed to chatbot interfaces. However, given its deep integration across the iPhone, accessing Siri via an app may feel redundant. Beyond the iPhone, the upgraded Siri is available on other Apple devices, including iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, CarPlay, AirPods, Apple TVs, and Vision Pro. The Siri AI leverages Apple Intelligence and new Foundation Models, developed in collaboration with Google’s Gemini. These models are tailored specifically for Apple's hardware, utilizing proprietary data to create efficient, smaller models that run directly on devices, enhancing privacy through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which ensures that personal data remains secure. Initial tests of the developer version of Siri AI showcase its improved ability to manage everyday tasks, like locating specific photos, summarizing group texts, and adding calendar appointments from texts. The assistant has also become adept at answering questions that usually require web searches, like local event details or current news. Though the developer beta has encountered minor hiccups—such as Siri misinterpreting queries—there's a clear trajectory towards making Siri a more integral part of daily digital life. The stability of this year's developer betas makes the public beta a promising opportunity for users. However, those reliant on their devices for seamless performance may want to wait for the full public launch of iOS 27, anticipated in September.
