Apple says it may remove some apps from the App Store if they don’t attract users

Apple has issued a stern warning to app developers regarding the future of their applications on the App Store. In a recent update to its App Review Guidelines, the tech company indicated that it may remove apps from its platform if they fail to engage users or receive regular updates. This represents a notable shift in Apple's approach, moving from a focus on rejecting duplicate or overly saturated apps to potentially expelling those that do not maintain user interest. Previously, Apple's guidelines cautioned developers against overwhelming the App Store with redundant applications, specifically mentioning categories that already had numerous entries. The guidelines humorously noted the abundance of apps in categories such as fart sound effects, fortune-telling, and drinking games, stating that only unique and high-quality apps would be accepted. The latest guidelines, released alongside Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), explicitly discourage developers from simply creating variations of existing successful apps or categories. This includes apps like simple timers, wallpaper apps, and sound effects in addition to the previously mentioned categories. Apple's new stance emphasizes that only apps offering a significantly improved or distinct experience will be allowed on the platform. The company aims to enhance app discovery within the App Store, having introduced personalized recommendations and tools to support developers in reaching new and existing users. By potentially removing low-quality applications, Apple hopes to declutter the App Store, thereby facilitating better visibility for developers who genuinely invest in their products.
