Apple sues OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft: What happened and why it matters

Apple has initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that the AI company unlawfully acquired confidential information and trade secrets related to its hardware technologies. Furthermore, Apple asserts that OpenAI requested manufacturing partners to utilize a proprietary metal-finishing process created by Apple while misleadingly suggesting it had Apple's consent. The deterioration of the relationship between Apple and OpenAI is particularly striking. In 2024, Apple announced a significant partnership with OpenAI, integrating ChatGPT into its devices, with OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman appearing alongside Apple executives for the announcement. However, tensions reportedly arose after OpenAI ventured into the AI hardware domain by acquiring former Apple design chief Jony Ive's startup, IO Products, in a deal worth $6.4 billion in 2025. In light of this, Apple has adjusted its AI strategy, opting for Google's Gemini AI models for the latest version of Siri instead of OpenAI's technology. OpenAI has publicly refuted Apple's claims, asserting, "We have no interest in other companies' trade secrets. Our focus remains on developing innovative technology that benefits users globally." IO Products has not commented on the lawsuit.
