Apple's Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops have become increasingly challenging to purchase this year, with numerous configurations marked as "currently unavailable" on the company's website—an unusual occurrence. For those looking to order, many models are facing shipping delays that could extend to weeks or even months. Notably, a high-end variant of the Mac Studio featuring 512GB of RAM has been removed entirely from Apple's online store. During Apple’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook addressed these supply issues while discussing how the company is managing ongoing component shortages. He attributed part of the problem to the surging demand for these desktops, particularly among users interested in running AI applications and other local tools. "Both the Mac mini and the Mac Studio are outstanding platforms for AI and agentic tools, and the growing customer recognition of that has outpaced our expectations, leading to demand that exceeded what we had forecasted," Cook explained. He also indicated that it might take several months before supply can adequately meet the rising demand. While Cook did not specify which components are causing the shortages for the Mac mini and Studio, he mentioned that the constraints are mainly due to limited availability of advanced manufacturing nodes utilized for their system-on-chip (SoC) production. This limitation has made it more difficult for Apple to request additional chips from TSMC, as the semiconductor manufacturer lacks the spare capacity to meet increased demands. Cook noted that these supply chain constraints have predominantly impacted the iPhone but have also had a lesser effect on the Mac models.
