Apple has once again demonstrated its commitment to enforcing App Store regulations by cracking down on the Cal AI food-logging application, owned by MyFitnessPal. The app was temporarily removed from the App Store after allegedly trying to circumvent Apple's rules regarding external payment systems. According to Apple, Cal AI engaged in several violations, including bypassing the mandatory in-app purchase system, which is a requirement for apps that provide access to digital goods. The tech giant pointed out that Cal AI had employed manipulative design tactics aimed at misleading users about its billing practices. The controversy arose after Cal AI attempted to implement a third-party payment system, specifically using Stripe, to unlock features while omitting Apple’s in-app purchase option during the checkout process. This maneuver violated Apple’s App Review Guideline 3.1.1, which mandates that developers offer Apple’s in-app purchase alongside any external payment links. Additionally, Apple cited deceptive billing practices as a significant concern. The app's paywall was criticized for prominently displaying weekly pricing while obscuring the total amount users would ultimately be billed. Users were also misled by a free trial toggle that failed to clarify the subscription's automatic renewal terms. Cal AI was further accused of using manipulative tactics, such as presenting users who declined the initial subscription offer with a different purchasing flow, violating the Developer Code of Conduct. Complaints from users labeled the app as a scam, primarily due to its confusing payment options. After addressing these issues, Cal AI was allowed back into the App Store. However, this incident highlights Apple's ongoing vigilance in regulating app compliance, even as the company faces scrutiny following its legal battle with Epic Games. As the app climbs the ranks in the Health & Fitness category, Apple’s consistent enforcement serves as a reminder of the rigorous standards developers must adhere to in order to thrive on the platform.
