Apple to move some Mac Mini production to U.S. this year in effort to boost domestic manufacturing

Apple has announced plans to relocate the production of certain Mac Mini computers to the United States later this year, marking a significant step in its strategy to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the tech giant to invest $600 billion in the U.S. economy, a promise highlighted by CEO Tim Cook during a White House event with President Donald Trump last August, which included a substantial $100 billion investment announcement. In a recent post on X, Cook emphasized the importance of this move, stating, "As part of our $600B commitment, Mac Mini will be produced in the US for the first time later this year!" This shift not only underscores Apple's dedication to domestic production but also highlights plans to expand its collaboration with U.S. suppliers for parts. The Mac Mini, a compact and budget-friendly desktop option starting around $600, will be manufactured at a new facility in Houston, where Apple had previously initiated production of AI servers. "We began shipping advanced AI servers from Houston ahead of schedule, and we're excited to accelerate that work even further," Cook added. The company has faced significant financial challenges due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, amounting to approximately $3.3 billion since the tariff measures were enacted last year. Currently, half of Apple's iPhones destined for the U.S. market are sourced from India, while the majority of other products, including Macs, AirPods, and watches, come from Vietnam. In a recent Supreme Court ruling that dismantled a substantial portion of Trump's extensive tariff agenda, uncertainty still looms as the former president expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. Looking ahead, Apple is set to inaugurate its 20,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing center in Houston, aimed at equipping students, supplier personnel, and U.S. businesses with advanced manufacturing skills reflective of Apple's innovative production techniques.
