Apple’s first foldable iPhone could launch in 2026, says Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple may be on the verge of launching its inaugural foldable smartphone, with reports suggesting that production for this highly anticipated device could commence soon. Industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that Foxconn, a primary manufacturer for Apple, is preparing to start work on the foldable iPhone by late Q3 or early Q4 of 2025. Although Apple has yet to officially announce any plans regarding a foldable model, Kuo's insights suggest that the company is making significant strides toward a potential release in 2026. He noted that the device is still in its developmental phase, with critical components—especially the hinge design—still being finalized. A key highlight of this foldable iPhone is its display, which is expected to be produced by Samsung Display. Reports indicate that Samsung is gearing up to manufacture between seven and eight million flexible screens for the device. However, actual shipments during the launch year may be lower due to the limited production timeline in 2026. Kuo also speculated that Apple might place an initial order for 15 to 20 million units, aiming to satisfy demand throughout the device's expected two- to three-year lifespan. Mass production is projected to begin in the latter half of 2026, with annual shipments anticipated to extend into 2027 and 2028. While details about the final design remain undisclosed, early speculation points to a book-style format, featuring a 5.5-inch external display and a more expansive 7.8-inch internal screen when opened. The foldable iPhone is rumored to boast a durable metal hinge and could retail for around $2,300 (approximately ₹1,99,000), positioning it as one of Apple's premium products. The expected launch window is in autumn 2026, but Kuo has advised that Apple’s plans could still undergo changes in the upcoming months.
