Foldable iPhone likely to debut in 2026, may cost nearly₹1.74 lakh

Apple is gearing up for a significant milestone with the anticipated launch of its inaugural foldable smartphone in 2026, signaling its entry into a market currently dominated by competitors like Samsung. According to insights from JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee, the device is expected to be part of the iPhone 18 lineup, slated for release in September 2026. While Apple has not officially confirmed any specifics regarding the foldable iPhone, Chatterjee's analysis, shared with CNBC, suggests it will adopt a book-style design reminiscent of the Galaxy Z Fold series. The foldable iPhone is projected to feature a 7.8-inch internal flexible display alongside a 5.5-inch outer screen, with the inner display anticipated to be free of visible creases. As the tech community's attention shifts away from the upcoming iPhone 17 series—expected to see minimal upgrades—investors are increasingly focused on Apple's 2026 plans. The new foldable model is estimated to carry a price of $1,999 (approximately ₹1.74 lakh) and is predicted to achieve sales in the low teens of millions during its initial fiscal year, with shipments expected to increase to around 45 million units by 2029. Previous reports have hinted at a similar launch timeframe, with many sources indicating September 2026 as the target date. Earlier leaks also suggested a potential base model price of $2,300 (around ₹1.99 lakh), along with features such as a dual rear camera setup, an aluminum alloy middle frame, and dimensions measuring 9.2mm when folded and 4.6mm when unfolded. Chatterjee's report also highlights potential beneficiaries in the supply chain, including Amphenol, a manufacturer of electronic connectors, and Corning, known for its specialty glass. However, the report underscores that any gains for these companies are likely to arise from the complexity of the components rather than high production volumes. As of now, Apple has not provided any comments regarding the development of its foldable iPhone.
