Apple is reportedly developing an innovative and cost-effective MacBook that will utilize the same processor featured in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reveals that this anticipated 13-inch MacBook will be powered by the A18 Pro chip, representing a groundbreaking moment as it is the first instance of an iPhone-class processor being integrated into a Mac. Kuo shared insights via Medium, indicating that Apple plans to kick off mass production of this new device between late 2025 and early 2026. The tech giant is aiming for an impressive production target of between 5 to 7 million units each year. This model is strategically designed to provide a more affordable entry into Apple’s laptop lineup, potentially catering to students and educational institutions. Additionally, Kuo speculates that the new MacBook could help Apple lessen its dependence on the high-cost custom silicon from its M-series, by utilizing the already optimized and energy-efficient A18 Pro chip, which is set to make its debut in the iPhone 16 Pro later this year. Speculations also suggest that the new MacBook will be available in various vibrant colors such as silver, blue, pink, and yellow, reminiscent of the colorful iMac and iPad offerings. This new model is expected to be priced below the current MacBook Air, which begins at $999 in the US. Industry insiders predict the new device may fall within the $700 to $800 price range, although official pricing has yet to be disclosed. In terms of performance, the A18 Pro chip is anticipated to deliver robust processing capabilities, with early estimates from 9to5Mac suggesting it could match or even outpace the original M1 in specific tasks, particularly in single-core performance. However, it may not excel in graphics-intensive applications, making it more tailored for the general consumer. As of now, Apple has not officially addressed the rumors surrounding the new MacBook. Should this device come to fruition, it could represent a pivotal shift in Apple’s Mac strategy, helping to broaden its market reach and provide a more affordable alternative to Windows laptops and Chromebooks, especially in budget-conscious regions.
