Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce touchscreen functionality to its MacBook Pro series, a significant departure from its traditional laptop design. Industry analysts, including the renowned Ming-Chi Kuo, indicate that the first MacBook Pro featuring an OLED display will also incorporate a touchscreen. This innovative panel is expected to utilize on-cell touch technology from Samsung, with mass production projected to commence in late 2026 and a commercial release likely in early 2027. Kuo suggests that this strategic shift stems from Apple’s ongoing analysis of user interactions with iPads, concluding that touch capabilities can significantly boost productivity and enhance the overall user experience in certain contexts. The anticipated change could also narrow the functional divide between MacBooks and iPads, which have historically occupied distinct roles within Apple’s product landscape. Additionally, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has chimed in on Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro plans, hinting at the potential inclusion of an M6 chip, although more recent discussions have shifted focus towards the upcoming M7 processor. While specifics remain scarce, there are lingering questions regarding whether the new MacBook Pro will feature a flexible 360-degree hinge or be compatible with the Apple Pencil. In parallel, Apple is developing an entry-level MacBook powered by the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro lineup, targeting a price around $700. However, this initial model will not include touchscreen capabilities. Kuo has mentioned that a second iteration of this budget MacBook, expected in 2027, may introduce touch support, but this is still under consideration within the company.
