Apple brings OpenAI’s GPT-5 to iOS and macOS

This week, OpenAI's GPT-5 model became accessible to many ChatGPT users, but a significant number rely on third-party platforms to access this technology. Among these, Apple's iOS stands out as one of the largest implementations. Users on the iPhone operating system currently interact with GPT-4, but exciting news has surfaced: Apple is preparing to transition to GPT-5 with its upcoming iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26, as reported by 9to5Mac. Although Apple has yet to confirm the release dates for these operating system updates, historically, major updates have been rolled out in September. This strategic move aligns Apple with other platforms that have already begun adopting the new model, such as GitHub Copilot and Microsoft's general-purpose Copilot, which have implemented GPT-5 in their public previews. The advancements in GPT-5 promise a significant reduction in hallucinations—up to 80 percent less—marking a pivotal shift in how OpenAI presents its models. Notably, GPT-5 is designed to autonomously select reasoning-optimized models based on user prompts. Free users will receive the model choice made by the system, while those with paid ChatGPT accounts can manually decide which model to apply to their queries. Details remain unclear regarding the functionality on iOS. Will the system default to GPT-5's non-reasoning mode, or will it have the option for reasoning capabilities? Furthermore, it's uncertain whether paid users will enjoy the same flexibility to choose models as they do in the ChatGPT app, or if they will be subject to the system's automatic selections like free users. As of now, answers to these questions are still pending.
