Apple looking to make 'premium' priced folding iPhones starting next year, analyst says

Apple is gearing up to introduce a folding iPhone as early as next year, according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a recent update, Kuo revealed that the tech giant is collaborating with Samsung Display, which is anticipated to manufacture up to 8 million foldable panels for this innovative device. However, some critical components, including the hinge design, are still under discussion, and Kuo cautioned that these plans could evolve. Known for his insights into the Asian electronics supply chain, Kuo, who works with TF International Securities, often shares information about Apple's upcoming products ahead of their release. The anticipated folding iPhone is expected to carry a 'premium' price tag, reflecting Apple's strategy to attract new customers and encourage current users to upgrade. With the iPhone accounting for over half of Apple's revenue, generating $201 billion in sales in the fiscal year 2024, the company is motivated to innovate amid a plateau in iPhone sales that peaked in 2022. Apple faces competition in the folding smartphone arena, with rivals like Huawei and Samsung having released similar devices since 2019. These foldable phones offer the convenience of a tablet-sized screen that can fit into a pocket. However, challenges remain, such as visible creases on the display and questions around long-term consumer demand. Research firm Trendforce highlighted that only 1.5% of all smartphones sold are foldable, while another analysis from Counterpoint noted a mere 3% growth in the folding market for 2024, predicting a decline in 2025.
