Apple may finally bring this awaited multitasking feature to iPhone with iOS 27

Apple is reportedly developing a new multitasking feature that will enable applications to operate seamlessly in landscape mode, set to be included in the forthcoming iOS 27 update. Traditionally, iPhone applications have been optimized for portrait orientation, which limits the ability to fully utilize larger screens. With this upcoming enhancement, users will experience a significant improvement in multitasking capabilities while using their devices in landscape mode. According to insights from Fixed Focus Digital, as reported by MacRumors, Apple is considering a feature akin to Huawei's "Parallel View" for iOS. This functionality will automatically adjust app interfaces to suit wider displays, particularly beneficial for foldable smartphones. The anticipated feature is expected to allow iPhones to adapt applications for landscape use, thereby enhancing multitasking and overall user experience on larger screens. Developers will benefit as they will not need to create separate versions of their applications. A similar capability is already offered on iPadOS, where many apps adjust their layouts when the device is rotated or when split-screen multitasking is activated. However, it remains unclear whether this new feature will incorporate a split-view function, similar to what is available on Android devices. Reports suggest that the Parallel View feature may be particularly targeted at Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone, which is speculated to have a 7.8-inch internal display. This larger screen could mirror the iPad’s Multi-Window feature, enabling users to run multiple applications concurrently. If these reports hold true, Apple may finally be closing the gap with Android, where split-screen functionality has existed for quite some time. As the company gears up to launch its foldable smartphone, enhancing app adaptability and productivity features will be crucial for providing a competitive edge in the market. Earlier, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman indicated that the foldable iPhone could support a split-screen view, allowing users to operate two applications simultaneously, complete with a navigation bar on the left side for quick access to supported apps.
