iPhone 17 will drive record Apple shipments in 2025, IDC says

Apple is poised to achieve unprecedented levels of iPhone shipments in 2025, fueled by the popularity of its latest models and a revival in its crucial Chinese market, according to a report by research firm IDC. The forecast predicts that Apple will ship approximately 247.4 million iPhones in 2025, marking a more than 6% increase compared to the previous year. This figure surpasses the 236 million units sold in 2021, which coincided with the launch of the iPhone 13. Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC, attributed this anticipated growth to the "phenomenal success of the iPhone 17 series," highlighting a significant surge in demand from Chinese consumers. This demand is expected to notably enhance Apple's performance in the region. In the context of the smartphone market, shipments refer to the number of devices dispatched by a manufacturer to various sales channels, including e-commerce platforms and retail stores. While shipments do not directly translate to sales, they serve as an indicator of anticipated demand for the products. Since the iPhone 17 series debuted in September, investors have viewed it as a crucial move for Apple, particularly as the company faces intensified competition in China and scrutiny regarding its artificial intelligence initiatives amidst rising Android competitors. IDC forecasts a remarkable 17% year-on-year increase in Apple's shipments in China during the fourth quarter, prompting the firm to revise its overall market growth projection for the year to a 3% increase, up from an earlier estimate of a 1% decline. This comes as local competitors like Huawei continue to erode Apple's market share. Adding to the analysis, IDC's report builds on findings from Counterpoint Research, which recently predicted that Apple is on track to ship more smartphones than Samsung in 2025, a significant achievement not seen in 14 years. Furthermore, there are reports indicating that Apple may postpone the release of the base model of its upcoming iPhone 18 until 2027, potentially disrupting its traditional annual launch cycle. IDC also warned that this delay could result in a 4.2% decrease in Apple's shipments next year.
