Apple MacBook Pro, Air, Mac mini, and Studio to get M5 upgrade in 2026: Report

In an exciting development for tech enthusiasts, Apple is gearing up for a significant upgrade to its Mac lineup, slated for 2026. A recent report indicates that the company will introduce a range of new devices powered by the highly anticipated M5 chipset, impacting the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Mac Studio. The first device expected to hit the market is a MacBook Pro utilizing the base M5 chip, with a potential launch as early as late 2025. Following this, models equipped with the more robust M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are projected to be unveiled in early 2026. According to sources familiar with the situation, a MacBook Pro identified by the internal code J704 is nearing release, succeeding the previous J604 model associated with the M4. Reports suggest that the new MacBook Pro is currently undergoing testing with a modified version of macOS Tahoe 26.0.2. A common sign of an impending device refresh includes the limited availability of existing MacBook Pro models in Apple’s retail stores, which aligns with this upcoming launch. Furthermore, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reportedly revealed the model number for the unreleased M5 MacBook Pro, indicating a possible late-2025 rollout. Following the initial MacBook Pro launch, Apple is expected to introduce the new M5 MacBook Air models, internally referred to as J813 and J815. These Air variants are likely to retain the 13-inch and 15-inch sizes of their M4 predecessors and may ship with macOS 26.2 in early 2026. High-end MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, designated as J714 and J716, are anticipated to launch in the first quarter of 2026, continuing the 14-inch and 16-inch display formats familiar to users. Later in the year, Apple is reportedly working on refreshed Mac mini models (J873s, J873g) and Mac Studio variants (J775c, J775d), expected to be released by summer 2026 alongside macOS 26.4. Additionally, there are hints of a potential new iMac (J833ct), although details on this front remain limited. With this upcoming wave of updates, Apple is poised to deliver a comprehensive refresh across its Mac portfolio, showcasing more powerful chips and enhanced hardware throughout 2026.
